It’s now been about a month since I left Vancouver to embark on a new travelling journey and what an adventure it has been so far. We started our trip in Mexico City, the hometown of my partner and I could have not imagined a better way to start my exploration of Latin America.
Mexico City was everything I hoped for and more. We only stayed one week in this beautiful city, but it was more than enough to make me fall in love with it.
Today, I want to share with you my Top 5 Attractions in Mexico City. If you ever visit Mexico City, then I hope that these places will charm you just as much as they charmed me. Enjoy!
Top 5 attractions in Mexico City:
1. Coyoacan & Frida Kahlo’s Museum
This part of Mexico City totally enchanted me. It is full of beautiful colors, flowers, cafés and gorgeous street art. It felt like the bohemian part of town and I could have totally seen myself living in this neighbourhood.
Plus, if you are into Art, the house of Frida Kahlo – also known here as ” La casa azul”, is located in this part of town too. It is painted in a beautiful blue color, hence its nickname ;).
I had never seen such a beautiful blue color. And the inside of the house is just as spectacular and colorful…
This part of town is perfect for a nice stroll and drinking some coffee at a nearby terrace :).
2. Centro Historico
Another must visit while in Mexico City is the historical centre. There you will be able to see the gorgeous “Palacio de Bellas Artes”. You simply cannot go to Mexico City and not check it out. Highly recommend it.
We even had the opportunity to partake in a free visit of the main theatre room inside as well and it was no disappointment …
The historical part of Mexico City is also where you will find El Zocalo- the main square in central Mexico City. It is HUGE and prior to the colonial period, it used to be the main ceremonial center of the Aztec city Tenochtitlan.
When we visited, there was a big festival on the main square so we could not really take any pictures of the empty space that is usually there.
We did, however, decide to take a tour of the Metropolitan Cathedral and its bell towers. It is only 20 pesos ($1 USD)! The view from up there is magnificent and the guide will tell you all about the different bells and their own unique story.
Note: You will also notice that many monuments and buildings in Mexico City are slightly crooked. That’s because of past earthquakes and because the foundations of the city used to be a lake, so the soil is still very soft and muddy (i.e. not as stable).
3. Xochimilco aka The Venice of Mexico
This place was truly an unexpected discovery for me. We got to Xochimilco via public transit (using the metro and then the light rail), it took us about 1.5 hour to get there as Xochimilco lies on the outskirts of Mexico City.
Trust me, it is so worth it the journey though! It is absolutely beautiful there, much more rural and it has a small town feel to it. The best part? The canal where you get to ride “Trajineras”, these little colorful gondolas-like boats. So much fun and very romantic!
TIP: Avoid the weekends to avoid the crowds and congestion that often happens on the canal when all the boats get out at the same time.
You can even try to navigate the boat if you are up for it ;).
4. La Condensa
By far, this neighborhood was another favourite of mine. There, I was able to find the health-hub of Mexico City with its vegan cafés and healthy smoothie bars. But it is also a beautiful green part of town with all its parks and restaurants with many terraces.
It is absolutely worth a visit. Two of my favourite spots there to eat healthy salads and enjoy delicious breakfasts, lunches and even dinners were: La Buena Tierra and
Ojo de Agua
5. Chapultepec
And last but not least: Chapultepec, which is pretty much a big park in the center of Mexico City. It is like the Central Park of that beautiful capital. There you can enjoy a quiet stroll, running, biking, performers, the castle (which was unfortunately closed when we went) and much more. If you enjoy Nature, then you have to go there. I will let the pictures do the rest of the convincing …
And there you have it, folks. These are only some of the places I enjoyed the most while visiting this gorgeous city for a few days; but to be honest, I loved it all!
If you ever go, I hope this article was helpful and that it gave you a few ideas.
Until next time,
Sarah.

We loved Mexico City too…HIGHLY recommend staying at The Red Tree House B&B…very memorable…every night is a lovely complementary happy hour where guest share their day….it books up almost a year in advance as so many regulars stay there…right across the street from Ojo de Agua so we ate there a lot…rated #1 B&B in the city….
Sounds like the place to be Janey! We visited and eat at Ojo de Agua in La Condensa many times and loved the vibe and food there!
